Salmon-Safe works with farmers to encourage the adoption of ecologically sustainable agricultural practices that protect water quality and native salmon. Operations endorsed by our independent professional certifiers are promoted with the Salmon-Safe label. Salmon-Safe farms gain competitive advantage in the marketplace through our public education efforts and the marketing efforts of our participating farmers. The launch of our certification program was accompanied by a high profile 2-year public education campaign that began in 1997. Introduced in 60 Oregon and Washington natural food stores, the campaign expanded the following year into 115 Fred Meyer supermarkets throughout the West, educating the public about opportunity to support family-scale farmers that are doing their part to conserve our salmon watersheds. Today, more than 30,000 acres have been certified Salmon-Safe in critical Northwest agricultural watersheds including the Willamette and Rogue basins of Oregon, Feather River of California, Clear Water River of Idaho, and Snoqualmie and White Salmon watersheds of Washington. Farms certified include both conventional and organic farms. After five years of site-by-site certification, Salmon-Safe is moving beyond single farm certifications through partnerships with other certifiers like Oregon Tilth and LIVE and conducting outreach in collaboration with local conservation organizations working on-the-ground in salmon watersheds. |
Salmon-Safe's farm program operates in watersheds whose ecological significance for native salmon is complemented by the commitment of farmers to doing their part to restore local ecosystems.
