Northwest Salmon-Safe Organic

Salmon-Safe Organic is a joint venture with Oregon Tilth, a leading West Coast organic certifier, to further protect biodiversity and aquatic habitat on Northwest farms while helping to redefine the practice of ecologically sustainable agriculture nationally. Oregon Tilth and Salmon-Safe offer organic growers a comprehensive farm assessment program as part of their routine annual Tilth inspection for a flat fee of $99.

Since 1997, Salmon-Safe has worked with both organic and conventional growers with the objective of minimizing ecological impacts from agriculture in Pacific salmon watersheds. Leading organic operators such as the Organic Valley cooperative of dairies and Lundberg Family Farms have received Salmon-Safe certification for their pioneering efforts to farm in an ecologically sustainable manner.

Working with Oregon Tilth, Salmon-Safe developed an "overlay" standard for organic growers that includes additional riparian area management, irrigation water use, and erosion control criteria that are either not covered, or are covered only indirectly, under organic certification. Pest management issues are addressed to the extent that inputs approved under organic management are harmful to aquatic ecosystems.

In certain watersheds including the Rogue and key Puget Sound tributaries, Salmon-Safe Organic offers complimentary certification to farmers for a two or three-year period to encourage the wide-scale adoption of water quality and habitat conservation practices.
