Salmon-Safe works with leading farmers throughout the Northwest to help restore salmon habitat on farmland by planting trees, growing cover crops, improving irrigation systems, and applying natural methods to control weeds and pests. Operations endorsed by our third party professional certifiers are promoted with the Salmon-Safe label. Our farm certification program is focused on management practices and the degree to which a farm's operations are compatible with best management practices for avoiding harm to streams and salmon populations. Management practices are addressed in six primary areas: riparian area management, water use management, erosion and sediment control, chemical use management, animal management, and biodiversity conservation. This system was developed over a two-year period with biologists, agronomists, and farmers, and has been tested in the field at more than 150 farms in Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho across a variety of crops. |
The Salmon-Safe standards include a "High Risk" list of
pesticides that pose excessive risks to salmon and aquatic ecosystems. New
research by NOAA Fisheries indicates that the application of many agricultural
pesticides can have adverse developmental and behavioral impacts on salmonids.
